Each week we ask an expert for tips on how to invest £10,000. This week’s contributor is Holly Mackay, the founder of the personal finance website Boring Money.

Mackay, who lives in the Buckinghamshire village of Penn, emphasises the need for fledgling investors to have a broad mix in their portfolios, to “minimise the risk of overexposure to any one thing”.

“Look at the recent share price slides of technology stocks in America, such as Facebook and Amazon,” said Mackay, 46. “Anyone who just held these shares would have been grinning in 2017 but they’d be less happy about it recently,” she said.
